Finding a Good Table To Play At
If you have ever visited an online venue, you know that there are thousands of players playing poker at any given point. This results in there being hundreds of different tables to choose to play at. A new online player may be confused and uncertain as to which limits or tables to play first. Because of that, here is a guide that will help you determine which type of table is best for you to begin playing.
If you’re just looking to have a good time…
Tables which offer free play or low limits are probably the best place for you to start playing poker. A game of poker can be enjoyed without worrying about losing or making too much money.
Unfortunately, a side effect of playing low limits results in playing less quality poker. When there is no reason to preserve chips, players tend to play worse and worse hands…even going all in with terrible starting hands. There is also almost no reason for a player to fold a hand without seeing a flop or additional cards. In micro limit games, this is especially true as calling a nickel or dime is no big deal.
The basic game rules, betting rounds, and strategy is the same for these tables, however. So it is worth playing if you just want to go in for fun. Don’t try and make the jump to a pro level after playing these tables though.
If you’re looking to improve your game…
As with any game, practice is the best method to improve at the game of poker. If you want to make the leap to the next level of playing poker, you have to work hard to learn the game better before you can.
Unlike low limit tables, players who will help you get better will often be much better than you. They will play much better quality poker and will probably take some of your chips from the get go! By observing these players and playing against them, however, you can better get a feel for what works and what does not in a real poker match. By playing with these types of players, you will gain good habits that will help you in the long run…even if it costs you now.
If you’re looking to make money!
There are two factors that will make you the most money. Poor play from others and high limits for them to waste away their money. There are a couple of general guidelines on finding these tables the easiest.
The lower the limits, the worse the players usually are. If you are very good at poker, you won’t be spending time at lower limit tables. Most good players can work up a high enough bankroll to play bigger limits and make more money in those tables. In the low limits, you will be stuck with mostly bad players who put their money into the pot too fast.
Look at the size of the average pot. Each poker table posts the size of an average pot of a table. By obvious choice, the pot that is higher has looser play at the table. If the pot is low, then there is a good chance you won’t make money fast playing at this room. So go for the larger average pot tables, where it is likely you will be able to get in big hands quickly.
What poker room you choose to play at. This may be the most important factor of them all. While some poker sites promote good play by teaching their players how to play better, others have the weakest pool of players on the internet. Do your research and find out where the best venue to play weak opponents is.
No matter which table you decide to play the first time online poker, don’t forget you are never tied down to a certain table. Don’t lose at the same table all day, just get up and change to a better table that may have better luck for you.
