5 Card Stud Poker Rules

The original Stud game, Five Card is a tough game to play nowadays. Although it used to be the most widely played game in the past, it has been pretty much wiped out by more popular poker games of late.

The main problem with this game for players usually seems to be the relative ease and boredom of the game. Players usually don’t make big hands, bluffs usually don’t work, and all the flashy aspects of poker aren’t apparent.

However, there are a few venues where you may be lucky enough to still find this game. If you are interested in this game, here is a guide for you.

The Game:
The order of play in a Five Card Stud game is as follows:

  • Like with Seven Card Stud, and other Stud games, players ante before the hands are dealt to them.
  • Every player receivers one face-down card and one face-up card.
  • The player with the highest ranked card starts the first round of betting.
  • Another face-up card is dealt to each player.
  • Another round of betting.
  • Another face-up card.
  • Another round of betting, betting limits are raised.
  • The last card is dealt, this one also face-up.
  • A final betting round occurs.

After all the betting ends, players show their hands with the player who bet last revealing first. Like with normal poker, the best poker hand wins the game.

Betting Note:
Like with other Stud games, betting starts with the player showing the highest card in his face-up cards. Betting then continues clockwise of the first person who bets. This means, like in Seven Card, a different player can start betting every round!
