Texas Holdem Poker Rules

The most popular poker game in the world currently is by far Texas Hold’ Em. Because a game of this style of poker can almost always be found on the television, whether it be played by celebrities or amateurs, people all over the world know of the game. Because of this, not only do poker players know the game, but also people who aren’t fans of the game know it. This game is the most commonly played game in both home games and casino locations as well.

Allowing the most players to play at one time of any poker game, as many as ten can be playing at one table at the same time. More players then this amount can be fit into multiple tables for games like tournaments and such. Usually there are two ways a winner is selected at the end of a hand in this game. 1) As players are eliminated from tables the tables keep the same amount of players until there is enough for just one table, or ten players left, or 2) both tables play out until one winner from each is left. Then the two winners from both tables go heads-up until only one winner is left.

The Game
While Texas Hold’ Em is not hard to learn, it does have a set bunch of rules and an order to how it should be played. That order is listed below.

  • Each player initially receives two cards that are dealt face-down. These cards can only be used by the player they are given to and should not be revealed to other players until the end of the hand.
  • The first round of betting occurs and continues until all players have either called or folded.
  • The dealer now puts three cards in the middle of the table. The first community cards, known as the flop, can be used by any player at the table to make a poker hand.
  • A second round of betting occurs.
  • The turn, or another community card, is put next to the flop in the community cards. As before, these cards can be used by everyone.
  • A third round of betting occurs.
  • The river, or the final community card, is dealt. No more community cards will be dealt after this hand, so players should have made their best hands already and have them ready to go.
  • A final betting round lets players get more money or leave the hand depending on what poker hand was made. The best five card poker hand wins the pot as always.

The Betting Rounds
In Texas Hold ‘Em the cards you receive are purely based on luck, but the betting patterns you exhibit require skill and knowledge.

In every poker game a player usually has four options on what he can do during a betting round. They are listed below.

Fold – Not every poker hand has a good chance of winning the pot in the end. If you don’t feel you can win with your hand then folding is the option that allows you to get rid of your cards without wasting more chips.
Check – Checking is the term that describes the process in which a player can choose to see the next cards without betting. All players must check for this to work.
Call – Calling is when you place the exact amount raised before you to see more cards or end the game.
Raise – When you have a good hand or want to bluff, you will raise and put chips into your pot that other players can call if they would like to.

A typical betting round will not end until every player has called/checked to the next sequence of the hand or folded. If all players but one fold, the player left wins the hand by default.
